Over and over with the same useless information, “Be vegetarian, don’t eat carbs, don’t eat this, etc.” Until finally I got so fed up with trying other diets and failing, I went online. I was searching the web vigorously trying to find that new diet that celebrities are doing nowadays.<br />
I found an article on Carnie Wilson that really appealed to me, her trials and tribulations she has gone through her life with her weight I may not know the exact trouble she has gone through with her weight problems, but I know the struggles I’ve been going through with mine, and I can tell you right now that I have had it up to here (raises hand above head).<br />
So as I kept reading this reading this article, I finally get to the important part, which is how she is losing weight now. Any other diet that involves eating the ‘’diet’’ food usually means they’ll ship you a lifetime supply of frozen TV dinners that never end. I don’t know about you, but when you can hold your entire meal in a frozen ice block, it might be time for a change in lifestyle.<br />

Add to that stack all the diet products, diet patches, diet food, prescription diet pills and other weight loss drugs and pretty soon you&#8217;re talking about a virtual mountain of weight loss products designed to help you lose weight fast. If you really wanted to get carried away, you could then add to that heap all the weight loss programs, diet plans and diet programs that have issued a book within the last year. Can you imagine how big that mountain is now?<br />

A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. Much of this total is due to sales of weight loss diet pills and other weight loss drugs.</p>
<p>How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. &#8220;98% of today&#8217;s dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body&#8217;s panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term&#8221; (source: Stanford University).</p>
<p>People are confused about how to achieve healthy weight loss that&#8217;s permanent. That&#8217;s why we&#8217;ve created this list of the Top 10 Exercise Tips For Rapid Weight Loss. The best weight loss program absolutely must include regular exercise, so with that premise in place let&#8217;s take a look at some real, honest and accurate weight loss information.</p>
<p>1. Our first exercise tip is to ignore some of the weight control advice from the experts. For at least the last year, there&#8217;s been a big push by several authorities (including the Surgeon General of the United States) to get people walking. Many people have been encouraged to walk 10,000 steps per day to maintain fitness, and &#8220;10,000 Clubs&#8221; have cropped up all over the country. Unfortunately, just walking won&#8217;t lead to much in the way of fat loss. Research done in Canada found that people who perform a moderate intensity activity (like walking) lose a lot less fat than those who exercise intensely. The primary reasons are that walking doesn&#8217;t get you into the target heart rate zone and doesn&#8217;t increase your metabolism very much following exercise. Because walking doesn&#8217;t burn much muscle glycogen, the body won&#8217;t metabolize much fat after a walking workout. A much better approach is to exercise intensely (above 65% of maximum effort).</p>
<p>2. To solve your weight issue once and for all, it&#8217;s vital to incorporate some type of weight lifting into your exercise plan. Scientists at the University of Colorado (Denver) discovered that resistance training for seventy minutes burned as many calories as running at seventy percent of maximum capacity for fifty minutes (source: Med Sci Sports Exerc; 34: 1793-1800, 2002). When you consider all the other benefits imparted by resistance training (stronger bones, ligaments, muscles, etc.) it becomes clear that incorporating weight training into your workout regiment is one weight loss tip that works.</p>
<p>3. Our third exercise tip is quite simple: just do it! Exercise is simply the best, fastest and most efficient way to reach your ideal weight and lose fat for good. Dieting doesn&#8217;t even compare. When you rely on dieting alone to help you achieve your fitness goals you will always be disappointed. As reported in ‘Fitness Rx&#8217; in August of 2004, dieting without exercise is a sure recipe for disaster because when you diet without exercising up to 1/2 of the weight loss we experience will be from muscle loss. See, if you dramatically lower your caloric intake and you&#8217;re not exercising, your body will lose muscle. Since muscle is the &#8216;fat burning furnace&#8217; of the body, the absolute last thing you want to do on a weight management program is give it up voluntarily. Consistent exercise, and particularly a weight lifting program, will preserve muscle and burn more fat.</p>
<p>4. This next exercise tip may seem like common sense, but it still bears repeating. If you want to reach your ideal body weight faster, then you must participate in weight loss exercise more often. It was back in 1996 that the Surgeon General began encouraging Americans to work out in 30-minute increments. Working independently, the United States National Academy of Sciences and the World Health Organization later reported that people wanting to lose weight faster should exercise up to sixty minutes per day. Research done at the University of Minnesota has proven that you can boost your weight loss results by up to forty percent by simply doubling your exercise time (source: Am J Clin Nutr; 78: 684-689, 2003). Will 30-minutes of exercise still work? Of course! But to really burn fat quickly, consider upping the ante to sixty minutes per day.</p>
<p>5. As if you weren&#8217;t convinced already, our next exercise tip also encourages you to add a weight lifting routine to your workout strategy. The reason is that only resistance training (commonly referred to as weight lifting) has the ability to add muscle to your body. Aerobic exercise won&#8217;t do it, and dieting certainly won&#8217;t either. Only regular weight lifting workouts will add the muscle you need to burn fat and keep it off forever. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue, burning calories 24/7. As a matter of fact, one single pound of muscle burns about fifty calories more per day than a pound of fat. So it stands to reason that the more muscle you have, the more calories you&#8217;ll burn around the clock (yes, even while you&#8217;re sleeping). So get started on that weight lifting program today.</p>
<p>6. You&#8217;ve probably heard that you should find a workout buddy to help you get to the gym. That&#8217;s good advice, but a better idea is to find a &#8216;challenger&#8217;. A ‘challenger&#8217; is someone that gets in your face and challenges you to do better. He or she makes you uncomfortable by making you accountable. Sometimes the best thing someone can do for us is to make us mad, embarrassed or uneasy! This prompts us into action, and that action is for our own benefit. Do you have a ‘challenger&#8217; in your life? Get one, and get one today! Maybe it can be your friend from work, or perhaps someone from church. How about a sibling? A ‘challenger&#8217; is someone who knows you well enough to push when you need to be pushed, who will not let you make excuses. A good ‘challenger&#8217; will call you at home and question why you&#8217;re not at the gym today. A good ‘challenger&#8217; will stop by your desk at work to see what you&#8217;re eating today. A good ‘challenger&#8217; will not let you fail.</p>
<p>7. The next exercise tip is that, in addition to a &#8216;challenger&#8217;, you need to find an &#8216;encourager&#8217; to help you with your diet and exercise program. An ‘encourager&#8217; helps you without accusing. An ‘encourager&#8217; supports, believes in, and bolsters you at all times. Do you have an ‘encourager&#8217; for your battle against fat? You should get one. Everyone needs an ‘encourager&#8217; just as much as they need a ‘challenger&#8217;, perhaps more. Whereas a &#8216;challenger&#8217; will demand that you get to the health club today, an &#8216;encourager&#8217; will pick you up on their way to the gym and make it fun enough that you&#8217;re glad you went too.</p>
<p>8. This exercise tip is to seek expert advice so you get everything you can out of your workout sessions. Let&#8217;s face it, nobody can possibly be proficient in all areas. There are times in our lives when we need to get some expert assistance. When the car is broken, you get help from a mechanic. When you have legal trouble, you get help from an attorney. When the refrigerator breaks down you call a specialist. When you&#8217;re about to fight the world heavyweight champion, you seek help from an experienced trainer. And when you&#8217;re trying to write your own weight loss success story, you get assistance from an expert. If you&#8217;re serious about this fight against fat, then you need to find an expert. Ask a personal trainer or gym staff member how they can help you jump-start your fitness program and start making serious progress. Nobody has to fight this fight alone, and a fitness expert can help you exercise to lose weight permanently.</p>
<p>9. If you don&#8217;t have time to complete a full exercise session, at least do SOMETHING physical. If you simply don&#8217;t have time to get into the fitness center at all it&#8217;s better to make sure you get at least some level of activity. You could, for example, walk up the stairs during your lunch hour and burn 100 calories in a ten-minute climb. The bottom line is that every activity burns at least a few calories (even watching television burns 75 calories per hour!), so even if you skipped your workout today you can still get active.</p>
<p>10. The final exercise tip in this list is to work out where you&#8217;ll find the most weight loss support and weight loss motivation to encourage you. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have gout. And my first gout attack was a very painful introduction to a condition that is more common than most people think. It completely blindsided me. I had no idea that my diet (and a few other factors) had been putting me at risk for gout. Who knows how long this disease had been stalking me ready to strike. I have since learned that a diet loaded with foods high in purines can cause and aggravate gouty arthritis (gout is a type of arthritis).<br />

Just a short story about how my first gout attack happened:</p>
<p>I was on vacation with my wife and we were staying at a hotel in Denver, Co. We were having a good time and splurging; a night on the town (a few beers), a nice meal (shrimp cocktail, prime rib and creamed spinach), we were having a great time (a few more beers).</p>
<p>I popped some aspirin because I always take aspirin for anything that ails me (I heard it is good for hangovers too), and I took my high blood pressure medication (a diuretic). The next morning I woke up and my right foot had swollen up so big that I could not even get my shoe on. And talk about PAINFUL, it virtually took me 5 minutes to put a sock on and I could barely walk!</p>
<p>I thought to myself, &#8220;What the hell is going on?&#8221; So I popped some more aspirin for the pain (Oh boy, big mistake &#8211; I&#8217;ll explain later). Long story short, I had to go see a doctor and he told me I was having a gout attack. When he listed the dietary risk factors for gout, I immediately recognized that a lot of the foods I had been eating coupled with some drugs I was taking (and being overweight did not help matters) had made me a walking &#8220;gout time bomb.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here is a short breakdown of some of the dietary factors which contributed to my gout attack:</p>
<p>1) Seafood: Although the shrimp I had the night before my attack was undeniably a factor because all shellfish have high purines, shrimp is not the worst offender. Some other fish have even higher amounts of purines &#8211; anchovies, sardines, smelt, and mussels are just a few. Back off the seafood if you have gout.</p>
<p>2) Red Meat: I had a huge slab of prime rib the night before my attack. It was delicious, but red meat is high in purines, so it was a contributing factor to my gout attack. Liver, sweetbreads, organ meats, and gravies are some other foods that are in this high purine category.</p>
<p>3) Alcohol: Beer is a big No No if you have gout, which pisses me off (because I love it). I had probably 8-10 beers the night before my gout attack. All alcoholic drinks can aggravate gout, but beer is especially bad because it has large amounts of brewers yeast and yeast is one of the highest purine containing foods there is. If you have gout, just moderate your drinking and you should be ok.</p>
<p>4) Some veggies are high in purines: Spinach is one of them, and I did have spinach the night before my attack (culminating in my perfect storm for a gout attack). Some other high purine vegetables are asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, kidney and lima beans. Please note that these are just moderately high in purines and most likely will not be a problem to gout sufferers in moderation. Most vegetables are actually very low in purines.</p>
<p>Ok the dietary breakdown of my &#8220;night before&#8221; is completed. But there are some other things I was taking that absolutely contributed to my gout attack. Remember I said I would explain about aspirin? Well, aspirin is also a contributing factor for gout when taken in high amounts. Aspirin increases the level of uric acid in the body and uric acid crystals in the joints of the body is what causes gout. I was taking probably 8-10 aspirin/day before my gout attack, I have since changed over to ibuprophen. Low dose aspirin in most cases will not aggravate gout.</p>
<p>And last, but not least, I have high blood pressure, am overweight, and in my 50&#8217;s. I was taking a high blood pressure medication which contained a diuretic. Diuretics have been shown to be associated with gout because they can also increase the uric acids levels in the system. Although not the main culprit in most gout attacks, diuretics can be a contributing factor.</p>
<p>Over the years I have learned a lot about what causes gout, the proper diet to decrease my chances of having a gout attack, and how to live with this painful disease. At the time of this writing it has been nearly 3 years since I have had an attack of gout and I give credit in large part to a proper diet. If you have gout and want to lessen your attacks then you should also learn how your diet can be adjusted to eliminate gout from your life. Believe me, it is a lot less painful to change your diet for gout, than to suffer with gout.</p>

<p>Dr Kushner said that he advise his overweight patients that exercise is very good for them, but for successful weight loss, he emphasizes a healthy diet in the beginning. &#8220;Firstly, we&#8217;ve got to get a hold on your diet,&#8221; Dr Kushner said. &#8220;Then, as you are losing weight, feeling better and you are getting lighter, you can then shift more and more toward being more physically active and then living a physically active lifestyle for the rest of your life which is critical to keeping your weight off permanently.</p>
<p>James O. Hill, PhD, professor of pediatrics medicine and the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado at Denver said that Prof Kushner&#8217;s weight loss strategy is a reasonable approach to losing weight effectively but others have had success including physical activity early on. It is easier to cut 1,000 calories from a bloated diet than to burn off 1,000 calories through exercise.</p>
<p>Prof Hill went on to emphasize that there are numerous studies that show that exercise is associated with weight loss when done in enough volume and consistently. It all depends how much exercise you do.</p>
<p>Another medical doctor, Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, said that she emphasizes getting exercise immediately with obese patients, partly for its mind body benefits.</p>
<p>Dr Peeke said that she asks her patients to start walking as a way to &#8220;celebrate&#8221; their body with activities. &#8220;For years, they have blown off their body, so by having them actually using their body, they can begin to integrate their body back into their life and not use it as a source of torture or torment or shame.&#8221;</p>
<p>All the weight loss experts metioned above agreed that no matter how you lose the extra pounds, you need to be active to keep them off. &#8220;You can&#8217;t find very many people maintaining a healthy weight who are not exercsing regularly,&#8221; Prof Hill said. &#8220;What we find is that people who focus on diets alone are not very successful in the long run without also focusing on regular exercise&#8221;.</p>
<p>He further warned that people can be wildly successful temporarily at losing weight through diet alone, but there are plenty of data to show that those people regain the weight if they are not physically active or exercising regularly. &#8220;When it comes to weight loss, you can&#8217;t talk about diet alone and you can&#8217;t talk about exercise alone because you absolutely have to address both issues at the same time,&#8221; declared Dr Timothy Church, MD, MPH, PhD, director of preventive medicine research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.</p>
<p>&#8220;The average person overestimates the amount of activity they are doing by about 30% and underestimates their food intake by about 30%,&#8221; said Kathianne Sellers Williams, MEd, RD, LD, a registered dietitian, personal trainer, and wellness coach in Atlanta. She said, &#8220;When I am looking at people&#8217;s food consumption and activities, sometimes things just don&#8217;t add up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I do think that people think, oh, I just did 60 minutes at the gym or I just did 30 minutes at the gym and think that counteracts a lot of what they are eating. But the reality is, our food portions are huge.&#8221; Plus, you have to look at all the other calories you ate or drank that day and how sedentary you were apart from your workout. The rest of the day, you are sitting down and you are also eating other things,&#8221; Dr Peeke said. &#8220;How are you going to burn of those stuff, let alone this extra little treat that you just thought you wanted?&#8221;</p>
<p>It is hard to accurately estimate how many calories you burn working out. Dr Timothy Church said, &#8220;If it is an intensive workout, you will kind of instinctively think, wow! That&#8217;s cool! I just put enough in the bank for two days. But and you really have not!&#8221;</p>
<p>For example, it is estimated that a 150 pound person who bikes furiously for 30 minutes burn about 340 calories. Let&#8217;s just say that this person would have burnt 70 calories sitting on the couch watching TV, the extra calories they burned by biking drops down to 270 calories. That&#8217;s less than the 300 calories in just one cup of cappuccino.</p>
<p>Treadmills and other exercise machines often have monitors that estimate how many calories you are burning. Those displays are &#8220;close, but for each individual as they can vary quite a bit,&#8221; said Prof Kong Chen, PhD, director of the metabolic research core at the National Institutes of Health. Prof Chen suggests using calorie displays on exercise equipment for motivation, but not to offset your eating. &#8220;For example, it doesn&#8217;t matter if the monitor says, 300 or 400 calories. If you do that every day or increase on that level, then you have achieved your purpose. But if you&#8217;re feeding yourself against that, then no, I wouldn&#8217;t recommend that&#8221;.</p>
<p>Those machines may not subtract the calories you would burn without exercising. &#8220;It isn&#8217;t 220 calories for those 40 minutes of exercise versus zero. If they were sitting at work or playing with their kids, they are probably burning 60 to 70 calories during that period of time,&#8221; Prof Kushner said. &#8220;You have to minus out what you would burn if you didn&#8217;t exercise. So it really becomes much less.&#8221;</p>
<p>Therefore your best bet for effective weight loss is to lead a physically active lifestyle that goes above and beyond a brief bout of exercise. &#8220;It is not just about 30 minutes of exercise a day, it is about avoding being sedentary.&#8221; Dr Chen said.</p>
<p>So the message isn&#8217;t that the half hour on the treadmill isn&#8217;t any good, it is just that the 30 minutes on the treadmill is not going to make up sedentary hours. So you should weave in physical activities throughout the entire day.</p>
<p>So which is the best method for losing weight effectively and to keep the pounds off permanently? Diet or exercise? The answer is both together.</p>
